My Mentor is Our Hero

Mathematics is a subject that most people used to hate and ignore. Well, it’s quite evident among students who encounter tragic experience with it.
In contrast, there are students who excelled in Mathematics not because they are genius and born with great capability to understand concepts in this discipline but because they show interest, patience and eagerness in studying.
The picture on the left shows a teacher holding a trophy. She is a teacher from Dolores Central School Annex in Brgy. Bungoy, Dolores, Quezon. She is a certified curricularists who excelled in the field of Mathematics teaching. She is currently a Master Teacher I and adviser to Grade 6 students (Grade 6-Narra).  She also teaches advance lessons in Mathematics in Mathematics Teachers Association Program (MTAP) that provides opportunities to all types of learners. She actively plays her role in the curriculum by teaching and implementing what the written curriculum mandates. She is a respectable person, Sharon P. Gesmundo.

What does it mean to idolize someone? Is it about imitating that person or merely being a fan?

For me, it doesn’t necessarily mean to acquire the traits and characteristics and it is simply about admiring those characteristics hoping that someday I can also be a catalyst of change or serve as a role model to many aspiring students.
I’ve became one of Ms. Gesmundo’s student in Mathematics and Science. I used to be energetic during her teaching because I can easily comprehend what she was teaching. She explains the topic very well and engages us to participate in class discussion. Before, she used blackboard and chalk in teaching the lesson and made daily lesson plan. She used traditional method of teaching and paper-and-pencil assessment.

Reversed Psychology
Nowadays, most teachers are having a hard time to cope with the attitude of learners. Many of them feels annoyed after a teaching session.
A different technique was used by Ms. Sharon. She knows the nature of her students wherein the more she reprimand and say what acceptable behavior must be observe, the more the students will not follow. Instead, she used reversed psychology wherein she will tell her students the opposite of what she must command to her students.
“Wag kayong uupo ng ayos at tatahimik kasi may darating tayong bisita. Wag na rin kayong kumopya ng assignment para zero kayo bukas. Wag na rin kayong makinig kasi alam nyo na ang lesson, tama ba?”
Surprisingly, I was amazed when the students started to behave and listen to the lesson that Ma’am Gesmundo has prepared. Based on my observation, the teacher is not just knowledgeable of the subject content but also the hidden curriculum shown by the students.

I can still remember that I became a valedictorian but can’t even construct a valedictorian speech. That is the time when my adviser, Ms. Sharon Gesmundo, assisted me to make a nice speech. I learned alt of things from her. She has unique characteristic, she is just and does not tolerate wrongdoings. She is simply the best!
